Identify
Establish what the item actually is.
Before describing anything, settle two facts: which vehicle or application the item belongs to, and which seating position it serves. Almost every downstream question depends on these, and they are the two most frequently omitted details in a first message.
If the item is in front of you, look for anything already written on it — a moulded code on a plastic housing, a stamped mark on metal, a woven or printed label on the webbing. You do not need to interpret these; you only need to record them.
- Name the vehicle or application in plain words.
- Name the seating position explicitly rather than implying it.
- Note any reference or marking already present on the item.
- Decide whether the requirement is the whole restraint or one part of it.
